Suicide occurs throughout the lifespan and was the third leading cause of death among 15–29 year olds globally in 2021.

  • Common issues include anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and stress-related disorders. The impact of the pandemic has also highlighted increased rates of loneliness and burnout.

  • Signs include persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, mood swings, changes in sleep or appetite, withdrawal from activities, or difficulty concentrating. If these feelings interfere with daily life, seeking help is advisable.
3. How can you support a friend or family member struggling with mental health?
  • Listen without judgment, offer your support, encourage them to seek professional help, and check in regularly. It’s important to be patient and understanding.
4. What self-care practices can help improve mental health?
  • Regular exercise, a balanced diet, mindfulness practices, sufficient sleep, and social connections are key. Journaling and engaging in hobbies can also be beneficial.
5. What role does stigma play in mental health?
  • Stigma can prevent individuals from seeking help. Education and open conversations are vital in reducing stigma and encouraging supportive environments.
6. What should you do in a mental health crisis?
  • If someone is in immediate danger or experiencing a crisis, call emergency services or a crisis hotline. The National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number is 988 and can be reached by calling or texting 24/7.
